Top 50 Most Common Bengali Conjuncts You Must Know
Forget the 400+ theoretical conjuncts. These 50 cover 95% of everyday Bengali writing — ranked by frequency, paired with example words, and laid out as a 50-day learning schedule.

The Omniglot Bengali conjunct chart lists more than 400 theoretically possible clusters. Most of them never appear in real Bengali writing — they exist only because almost any consonant could be combined with almost any other. This article ranks the 50 conjuncts that cover 95% of everyday text by frequency, with an example word for each and the exact Avro keystrokes.
Memorise these 50 in roughly the order shown, and your typing speed on real content will jump dramatically. The list took about a week of careful corpus analysis to compile, but you only need to spend an hour reading it.
How this list was built
I sampled 100,000 words from a mix of contemporary Bengali sources: news articles, blog posts, Wikipedia pages, novels, and academic papers. For each conjunct I counted how often it appeared and what example words it appeared in. The result is a frequency-ranked list with realistic example words rather than a theoretical permutation table.
The frequencies in the rough ranking below are approximate but capture the broad shape of Bengali text. The top ten conjuncts alone account for roughly 60% of all conjunct occurrences. The full top 50 covers 95%. Beyond that you enter a long tail of niche conjuncts that mostly appear in specialised vocabulary.

How to practise
Do not try to memorise this table cold. Do this instead:
- Pick one row per day. Look at the conjunct, say its sound out loud, write the example word three times by hand, then type it five times in a row.
- Type the example word ten times until it flows without thought. Pay attention to how the conjunct feels in your fingers.
- Use the Falling Words game to drill it under time pressure. The arcade format builds reflex faster than slow practice does.
- Read one paragraph of Bengali and find every occurrence of the conjunct. Notice how it fits into real prose.
After 50 days you will have full coverage. Most learners reach comfortable conjunct speed in three to four weeks because the patterns reinforce each other — by the time you reach row 30, you have already encountered most of the visual ligatures in the example words for rows 1-29.
What about the other 350?
The remaining conjuncts in Omniglot's chart show up in maybe one in ten thousand words. They are mostly Sanskrit loanwords, archaic spellings, religious vocabulary, or technical terms in specialised fields. If you read a lot of formal academic Bengali you will eventually encounter them. If you mostly read everyday news and chat, the top 50 are enough.
The point of this list is not to teach you every conjunct in the language. It is to give you the smallest possible set that unlocks fluent typing on real Bengali text. Spend your study time on this top 50 first; the long tail can wait.
